Engelbert Helps Launch Leicester RSPCA £1 million appeal
Leicester’s Woodside Animal Centre has launched the biggest appeal in the history of the Leicestershire RSPCA.
It aims to raise £1 million through the “Care 4 Paws” appeal to build an onsite veterinary suite that will revolutionise the way animals are cared for at the centre.
The Scudamore Road centre, which takes in thousands of dogs, cats and other small animals each year, made the announcement at its annual gala day yesterday. (21)
The suite will reduce distressing and painful transportation to and from local vets.
The appeal has the backing of Leicestershire singing legend and patron Engelbert Humperdinck.
In a video message from his California home played to guests at the gala day, he said:” Animals have always played a very large part in our family and I certainly hope you will be able to raise the necessary funds to build an onsite veterinary suite at the animal centre.
“All of Leicestershire, please get together and make this dream a reality. Thank you.”

Woodside’s Branch Manager, Gary Wheway said: “The Care 4 Paws Appeal will ensure our centre continues to provide the best animal care possible, but we need £1million to turn our vision into a reality and we hope that the public of Leicestershire will support us to reach this target.”
“We simply cannot sustain the year on year increases in incoming cruelty case animals and the essential veterinary costs.”
He added: “These innocent victims of cruelty and neglect need our help and as Leicestershire's main animal welfare charity we need to tackle this growing problem head on, by reducing the overall treatment costs while giving the highest possible standard of animal care.”
The vet suite will make animal treatment at Woodside more cost effective, so the centres resources can go further and help to treat even more animals.
Woodside takes in, on average, more than 2,000 animals every year including the RSPCA Inspectorate cruelty cases.
They are consistently one of the top RSPCA rehoming centres, with one of the lowest animal return rates, in the UK.
All proceeds from the gala day, where the Lord Mayor of Leicester,Councillor John Thomas made the appeal’s announcement, will go to the appeal.
Mr Wheway added: “Although Woodside Animal Centre is proud to be part of the RSPCA, we are a separate self-funding charity and we are reliant on the donations we gratefully receive from the generous people of Leicestershire
“As an animal charity we receive no government funding.”

IT TAKES TWO- Interview ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK
His new album of duets features a gob-smacking array of legends, fromSir Elton John to Willie Nelson and Smokey Robinson. Music Week meets Mr. Engelbert Humperdinck
The only thing that matches the size of Engelbert Humperdinck’s discography is his Rolodex – as demonstrated by the veteran singer’s upcoming double LP Engelbert Calling. It will be Humperdinck’s 80th album, a staggering 45 years after his signature No.1 single Please Release Me. And what better way to celebrate such a milestone than with a slew of special guests, the phone numbers for which only the legendary Enge (as he prefers to be called) would have in his black book: Sir Elton John, Smokey Robinson, Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, Lulu, Olivia Newton John, Sir Cliff Richard and even Gene Simmons – it’s an eclectic mix of music royalty.
“Having hits is wonderful but you have to maintain it. You must respect your position and your moment - and make sure you have a good manager” ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK

Engelbert sings with his "Wish List" on new duets CD
Engelbert Humperdinck may be just three years short of his 80th birthday, but he has just recorded an album of duets with some of the biggest names in world music.
The Leicester singer has finished recording the tracks after drawing up a "wish list" of artists he wanted to work with.
Engelbert has teamed up with singers including Sir Cliff Richard, Sir Elton John, Willie Nelson, Lulu, Smokey Robinson and Gene Simmons, lead singer of US rock group Kiss.
The album, Engelbert Calling – recorded in London, Nashville and Los Angeles – is due to be released on March 17.
Engelbert, who lives in Los Angeles and Great Glen, said: "My son and manager, Scott Dorsey, started putting this together more than two years ago because there are so may international artists who are constantly touring the world.
"It's taken time to get producers, singers and schedules in the same place. It's been a labour of love and I'm truly proud of how it's turned out."
Duets he has recorded include a cover of the Shirley Bassey classic Never Never Never with Olivia Newton-John, Something About The Way You Look Tonight with Elton John and To Make You Feel My Love with country music legend Willie Nelson.
Sir Elton said his new recording pal was "one of the sweetest and nicest people I have ever worked with."
"We had a great time singing together. He is 77 years old and still sounding as good as ever."
Engelbert said: "I am truly thrilled to be working with some of the greats of show business and am honoured Sir Elton has contributed to this album.
"I had an absolute blast recording and measuring tongue sizes with Gene Simmons. He won – just."
Engelbert is already planning a follow-up album of duets called Engelbert Redialled.
He said he had six stars lined up and did not rule out the possibility of recording with Leicester's X Factor winner Sam Bailey.
He said: "Sam is a huge talent and of course I would love to be able to give her a leg up the ladder of success and, after 50 years in this business and 150 million record sales, I could offer her that."
Son Scott said: "It has always been a passion of mine to record a great contemporary CD with my father and his peers.
"With all the legendary collaborating artists, the CD comes together in a very raw, open recording. I love it."
Engelbert's new album – his 80th, including compilations – comes 45 years after his number one single and signature tune, Please Release Me.
